Founded in 2015, the Australian Society of Molecular Imaging (ASMI) is a not-for-profit (NFP) organisation which advances multidisciplinary imaging practices across medical and scientific fields. Specifically, ASMI was founded with the following key objectives:
- Promote the multidisciplinary field of molecular imaging in Australia.
- Advance understanding of biology and medicine through multimodal in vivo imaging of cellular and molecular events involved in normal and pathologic processes.
- Facilitate the exchange of information related to molecular imaging.
- Increase awareness and promote interest in the field of molecular imaging.
- Support research, development and training in molecular imaging, and
- Foster national and international collaboration in molecular imaging.
Towards achieving these objectives, ASMI hosts an annual scientific symposium which brings together national and invited international experts in molecular imaging fields, as well as students and early career researchers (ECRs) undertaking research in these professions. These symposia provide a platform for molecular imaging breakthroughs and advances to be clearly communicated, link industry partners with researchers, and facilitate research students in conceptualising, undertaking and presenting their scientific investigations. As molecular imaging practices require multidisciplinary skills, the members of ASMI have included biologists, chemists, physicists, physicians, radiopharmacists, sonographers, technologists and many other vocations. The collaborative efforts transpired from congregating such diverse expertise at the ASMI annual symposia have led to many scientific and industry outcomes. Not least, the support provided by ASMI to transform molecular imaging science in Australia has substantively benefited many students, ECRs, and professional researchers at every stage of their research career, as well as each of their respective research institutions. As a rapidly growing community ASMI will innovate the collaborative exchange and support of national molecular imaging research, fostering greater diagnostic and therapeutic outcomes for all future Australians.
